The Cloak of Public Health

The occurence of an outbreak reminds me of the heroic nature of working in public health. When schools are closed, roads are blocked, cities are shut down and transportation is suspended, the public health workers, who seem to be a plain profession in normal times, respond to the epidemic by physically entering into the epicenter, heroically than ever.

An outbreak could change everything. I never imagined a city that is always teeming with noise, traffic and people could suddenly be so silent in the day and totally dark at night. The unknown virus put a brake on the people, the city or the country that have always been on the fast track. In one second, it all stopped.

The public health responders put on their invisible cloak, transform into some superheroes and jump into the frontline to aggregate data, run analysis and find answers that everyone is hoping for. The criticality of their work at the special time makes the old-fashioned profession shine under the light of protecting life.

It is a moment to feel proud to join this ancient profession.
